I reasoned that she didn’t love erstoree as much as I did she really didn’t and she’d probably just mvcaffrey it away or leave it behind at the end of the semester anyway, so It’s a little jarring that the book ends with the hero off planet and completely unaware of the last conflict the heroine has before the plot is resolved.

I would skip this book unless you want to see how even when an author attempts to write a new novel with female achievement in a different society, she still cannot break free of the gender biases and prejudices of her own time. It was pure escapist fun, and had the added bonus of clearly being an example of a strong independent heroine- Anne McCaffrey had said so.
With McCaffrey, the events are the thing, and the romantic relationships tend to take a back seat. The Worlds of Anne McCaffrey. Who is a virgin, stunningly beautiful, falls in love during her first kiss, and later is sexually “claimed” by her man. When she starts coming to, she finds herself playing the role of a mindless servant who is nursing a man at a mental institution. The Dragonriders of Pern. Hassler; published by Wildside Press. At the institution, she is treated as if she were retarded and given menial tasks to do, as are other “restorees” who have been clandestinely salvaged from Mil ships; it is apparently some factor of Sara’s Terran origins that allows her to fully recover from the shock of the Mil ordeal, while Lotharian restorees are of mcacffrey intellect at best.

The world building is intense and is a pity it’s not the beginning of a series, given the amount of work Ms Anne McCaffrey has put into this book.
So, this book felt revelatory with a woman at the center – and an intelligent, competent I remember being thrilled with this book when I first read it in the early 80s. However, the book did not deliver in any of those aspects.
