The story is set in the first half of the 16th century and covers a period of roughly 25 years. He is also buried there, with his tomb bearing the inscription Csak a teste “Only his body”. The plot is intriguing, and you can easily connect with the characters. This book was a good teacher. Though the Ottomans attack again and again, the citadel stands firm, with also the women of Eger joining the battle.

A childhood sweetheart, gypsy, adopted father, army commander, and enemy Turk all repeatedly cross paths.

They flee together and get married. I learned a lot of Hungarian history and geography. Although he wrote a range of works, he had his greatest success as a historical novelist, particularly with Eclipse of the Crescent Moon and Slave of the Huns. A Hungarian friend from Eger pointed me to this story, partly set cdillagok her hometown.

Love this gsrdonyi in Hungarian. There were unexpected plot twists, and the in depth journey made me feel like I was watching this from right beside the characters.
